Hey everybody! How's everything going?
Let's get down to business.
Saw Watchmen on Friday in Methuen...It wasn't perfect (But how could it be?) but it was great! My thoughts:
GOOD:
-The death of the Comedian/Opening Sequence-Brilliant!
-Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach. Amazing! Haley nailed it! Great make-up job on his face to resemble Walter and his journal entries were near perfect. I just wish they could included his "American love" monologue.
-Moloch-Max Headroom! Is that you?
-Nite Owl/Dan-Patrick Wilson did a fantastic job depicting the "nice guy nerd" aspect of Dan.
-Billy Crudup as Dr. Manhattan-Well done despite the fact he did most of his lines in monotone. His whole "look back on his life" sequence was well done.
BAD:
Adrian Veidt / Ozymandias-WAY too obvious that he was the bad guy. I know that you had to make the story more acceptable to people who never picked up the book, but it could have been done better to keep people guessing.
Certain key lines got obscured or didn't get the kinda "umph" I always imagined them as, but that's me.
I was disappointed that the angle of Dr. Manhattan making electric cars viable in this reality, but if you think about it, is it too hard of a stretch that in this version of the Watchmen reality, that Adrian and Jon had come up with the means (Veidt Industries builds the first prototypes and Jon produces enough lithium to make it feasible), BUT the American auto makers and Big Oil lobbies all their plans down to nothing. No wonder Adrian disses Iaccoca!
Be willing to accept that Snyder had to make the film accessible to newbies/Joe Average just as Peter Jackson had to do the same with LOTR and you'll have a good time.
3 and 1/2 stars. Dan "I'm The Man" says check it out!
